John Nelson

President

John began learning trade skills as a teenager while building custom timber homes with his father. Later, he began working in concrete to cover living expenses and college tuition, taking on projects ranging from ADA ramps and signs to wind towers and hospital foundations. He assumed a leadership role with Moreno & Nelson and managed construction projects, contract negotiations, scheduling, strategic planning, material procurements, subcontractors, shop drawings, safety, quality control, and customer relations. In his role as President of Nelson Construction, he fosters leadership, accountability, respect, and collaboration at all levels of the organization while maintaining effective relationships with contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, owners, and officials.

Project Manager / Estimator / Marketing & Advertising

Cruz leads and manages all aspects of work in the field, including organizing daily tasks and setting production goals with crew leaders. He reviews and assesses the quality of work, oversees multiple projects, tracks progress and costs, identifies key milestones, creates projects and financial reports, oversees final project inspections and close-outs, oversees use of task codes in tracking labor costs for creating historical data referenced in bidding projects, leads meetings, manages budgets, selects and negotiates contracts and purchase orders, and helps develop lead field supervision and new hires through hands-on training. Cruz establishes strong, effective relationships with clients and business professionals.

Sergio Sanchez

Project Manager

Sergio graduated from WSU Pullman 2004 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, then worked for the Army Corps of Engineers for the last 15 years with the last 11 years managing construction projects for both the Walla Walla and Portland Districts. Sergio supervises construction projects from beginning to end, ensuring projects meet contract requirements, and are completed within time and budgetary constraints. Sergio’s understanding of the construction business process, construction methodologies and ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment are important for the success of our projects. Working with our Nelson Team to bid, plan and coordinate all aspects of the construction process; from coordination of sub-contractors to working with the customer, engineers, architects, and vendors.

AC recently joined the Nelson Construction family after retiring 33 years of serving as a law enforcement officer. He continues to educate himself in keeping up with OSHA and L&I updates to empower Nelson Construction employees on safety and practicing personal protective equipment. He spends a lot of time observing and gathering information on the company’s safety. Job site inspections to ensure that employees are using personal protective equipment and ensuring that site foreman’s are conducting safety meetings and updating foreman’s on OSHA and L&I updates.

Paul leads and organizes crews of up to 15 men on commercial, water treatment, power substations, and structural concrete foundations. He aids in estimating production and crew sizes for bidding, establishes production goals with project manager to "beat the budget", leads daily task plan reviews with crews, performs layout of projects, establishes GPS control utilizing Topcon equipment, coordinates with lead inspectors to measure and track progress for maintaining current work-in-progress quantities for pay applications, conducts safety reviews with other professional trades and general contractors onsite, and aids in the layout and reviews of all shop drawings from steel fabricators and engineers.

Durant is a crew leader who organizes groups of up to 8 men for structural concrete foundations and site work. He fulfills field-level administration and management duties for commercial and public projects, aids in estimating production and crew sizes for bidding, establishes production goals, reviews project budgets, participates in budget tracking progress meetings, leads daily task plan reviews with crews, performs layouts of projects, coordinates with lead inspectors to measure and maintain current work-in-progress reports, conducts safety reviews with other professional trades at sites, and aids in the layout and review of all shop drawings from steel fabricators and engineers.

Larry helps us keep on schedule and connects employees through superb communication between team members. Christy has been working in the construction industry for over 26 years. Her knowledge of construction helps in all aspects of the business. She is our controller and handles all financial documents for the company. Her willingness to help out and teach others is an asset to our company. She has been the secretary/treasurer for our local Underground Utility Council (Call Before You Dig) for over 20 years. This keeps our company in contact with all local utilities. “Seeing a project from start to end is very exciting to see,” says Christy. “I always look forward to seeing the work in progress photos or taking a field trip."
